If you are building a house and thinking of using 2" x 6" wall studs so you can get an R-18 batt in the outside walls, consider this: If you used 2" x 4"s instead and put 1" of two-component Fomo Foam (R-7 per inch) in the wall cavity and an R-11 unfaced fiberglass Batt behind it, you would have an R-18 in the 2" x 4" wall. The foam gives you the air seal that a batt can't and the R-11 batt gives you the reduced conductive heat loss for a cost effective R-18 wall assembly. What you save on lumber will practically pay for the insulation upgrade to R-18 and give you extra square footage of living space that would be taken up with the extra 2 inches of wall around the whole house. You'll also have better soundproofing. More and more builders are using this system. It is the environmentally responsible way to build. It takes less trees (and money) to build a house of 2 x 4s than 2 x 6s. The easy to install and complete foam kits for a new construction house will cost approximately $.88 per square foot. Price the batts locally and compare the price of 2 x 4s and 2 x 6s, subtract the difference from the cost of the insulation to get your true cost or savings. Consider the higher R-value, soundproofing, mold inhibiting properties and the extra square footage of living space you pick up. Don't forget to consider you'll also be saving money every month on your utility bills because the foam will make a better air seal and your heating and cooling costs will be less than they would be with an R-19 batt in a 2" x 6" wall. After figuring, just make a decision you can live with. FOMO FOAM. It just makes sense.
