Polyurethane Foam

This is especially valuable around rim joists and other difficult-to-seal areas. Some types of foam are also effective vapor retarders, so its often possible to omit the separate poly or kraft-paper vapor retarder. Finally, going with foam can provide added flexibility in designing a framing package: because dense varieties of foam offer a lot of insulating value per inch of thickness, its often possible to size studs and rafters based on structural loads rather than the amount of space needed for insulation.

Imagine the house as a series of shells enclosing the living space: warm inner wall, vapor barrier, house framing, insulation, cold house siding - and between vapor barrier and siding, a constant flow of air to evacuate humidity. I use modern aerosol foam. Oh, sure, it nags at you every time you get a $200 oil or gas bill, but will the time expended in buttoning up the house (to the extent that a rank amateur is capable) really pay off? Consider this: the newest generation of what used to be called superinsulation plastic, metal, and recycled material composites makes fiberglass look antiquated by comparison, is quicker and far less hazardous to install, and has the capacity to reduce your hornes heating and cooling load by 50 percent. A ridged sheet of insulation, preferably one that is a sandwich of aluminum foil and card (in order to protect the foil), is cut to size and fitted to exactly the inside of the frame, and the side facing the room is covered with fabric.
